What is the citizenship test 2026?
Sweden's new citizenship rules took effect on 6 June 2026 and require knowledge of Swedish society. If you can't prove that knowledge another way, you take a civics citizenship test (medborgarskapsprov). It tests basic knowledge of how Sweden is governed, democracy, history, working life, welfare and your rights and obligations. The test is developed by the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR), while the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) handles the citizenship application itself.
The test is based on the official study material Sverige i fokus, which is freely available and covers 13 topic areas β from democracy and law and order to the labour market, welfare, history and human rights. The test is written in Swedish.
How the test works
Around 60,000β90,000 people are granted Swedish citizenship each year. Preparing early β in a language you understand β gives you the best possible starting point for the exam.

Frequently asked questions
Who has to take the citizenship test?+
The civic-knowledge requirement applies to citizenship applicants aged 16β66. Knowledge can also be proven with certificates, for example a pass in SFI course D or Swedish from komvux. Exemptions may apply depending on your situation β always check with Migrationsverket what applies to you.
Who is responsible for the test?+
The Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) develops and runs the test. Migrationsverket handles the citizenship application and assesses the other requirements.
How many questions are there?+
Provisionally around 60 multiple-choice questions with four options, in about 90 minutes. The exact format is set by UHR.
Which languages are supported?+
The question is always in Swedish with a translation right below it β including English, Arabic, Persian, Somali, Tigrinya, Ukrainian, Russian and Spanish. Arabic and Persian are shown in correct right-to-left (RTL) layout.
Which topics are covered?+
13 topic areas from the study material Sverige i fokus: how Sweden is governed, democracy, elections and parties, law and order, labour market and economy, welfare, history, media, religion, traditions and human rights.
When is the test held?+
The first (pilot) test is planned for 15 August 2026. A passing test becomes one of the requirements for citizenship under the new rules.
