What you need to know

What is the citizenship test 2026?

Sweden's new citizenship rules took effect on 6 June 2026 and require knowledge of Swedish society. If you can't prove that knowledge another way, you take a civics citizenship test (medborgarskapsprov). It tests basic knowledge of how Sweden is governed, democracy, history, working life, welfare and your rights and obligations. The test is developed by the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR), while the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) handles the citizenship application itself.

The test is based on the official study material Sverige i fokus, which is freely available and covers 13 topic areas β€” from democracy and law and order to the labour market, welfare, history and human rights. The test is written in Swedish.

How the test works

Responsible authority
UHR develops and runs the test. Migrationsverket decides on citizenship.
Who it applies to
Citizenship applicants aged 16–66. Knowledge can also be proven with certificates (e.g. SFI course D). Exemptions may apply β€” check with Migrationsverket.
Format provisional
Around 60 multiple-choice questions with four options.
Time provisional
About 90 minutes.
Pass mark not set
UHR has not yet published the final threshold. We'll update as soon as it's confirmed.
Language
The test is in Swedish. With us you see the question translated into your language and hard words explained.
Topics
13 areas from Sverige i fokus: society and governance, democracy, law, work and economy, welfare, history, media, religion, traditions and more.
Test date
The first test (a pilot) takes place on 15 August 2026 in Stockholm; more dates are expected after that.
Registration & fee not set
How and where you register, and any fee, will be published by UHR. We'll add it here once confirmed.
Result
A passing test becomes one of the requirements for citizenship, alongside the other conditions Migrationsverket assesses.

Around 60,000–90,000 people are granted Swedish citizenship each year. Preparing early β€” in a language you understand β€” gives you the best possible starting point for the exam.

Official sources

We always point to the authorities for the latest, official information:

Details marked provisional or not set may change. The test is new and details are decided on a rolling basis by UHR β€” always check official sources before you register.

Evidence, not promises

We don't make up numbers

Sweden's test is held for the first time in August 2026, so there is no pass rate yet. Instead we show the Danish sister test's real figures as a reference β€” and update openly once Swedish data exists.
